Frequently asked questions

Do you have to have USA Hockey Certification to officiate?

100% YES! If you do not have a current USAH Card/Crest then you will not be allowed to officiate games Please Note: NWOA is a leader in innovative ways of developing offiicals so we do offer a non-registered program for USA Hockey registered players to experiment with officiating on 10U scrimmage games where no training, certification or judgement occures. These are 10u house league games operated in the cross-ice set up. Instead of coaches dropping pucks we use players dressed in non-player gear to conduct face-offs, call penalties and start/conclude games. If interested email NWOA President at Jarrod@NwRefs.com

Can a NWOA Member work for other associations?

100% YES!! We do not hold any judgments or reservations for officials trying to work as many games as they can at any level they are capable of working! NWOA is truly dedicated to developing officials and we will PROVE this statement thru our scheduling and support system! Unlike other associations our board members are allowed to officiate anywhere and our members are expected to officiate as much as their legs will allow them and in as many places as their skates can take them!

How old can you be to officiate?

USA Hockey has no minimum or maximum ages for officials. It is highly recommended that officials not work games of their own age classification or higher, regardless of level attained. Generally, officials can sucessfully officiate as young as age ten years old

Can a member of another referee association officiate games for NWOA?

100% YES! NWOA welcomes all officials to work our games and as an independent contractor thru USAH you're allowed to officiate wherever you want. Register with NWOA and sign up on HorizonWebRef so you can be included in any and all of the open assignments.
